Moving with dogs – plan ahead

Moving home with a dog can be very stressful for you and your pet. By starting the planning process early, you can make your move much less challenging. There are many things you can do in advance of your big move that will help you make the transition a smooth one. For example…

Will your pet be with you?

Some dog owners decide to send their pets to the homes of friends or family members during the move. It’s also common for dogs to be sent to boarding kennels so they don’t have to be part of the move itself. Make sure your dog has access to their favourite toys, bedding and bowls whilst you are carrying out the move. Your vet may be able to provide you with advice on keeping your pet happy and calm during the move if they are not going elsewhere.

More steps to take

You may need to schedule breaks during your move if you are heading to a different town or city. It’s also wise to have your new contact details engraved onto a tag before the move, so they can be identified from day one – remember to update their micro-chipping details as well.

If your new home doesn’t have sufficient fencing, you may need to keep them on a lead until it is secured. You may also need to go through the housetraining process again in case your new dog takes time to adjust to their new environment.

Keep calm

Try to stay calm before and during the move. If your dog sees that you are upset, they may become stressed too. It’s also important to try and stick to your normal routine in the days leading up to the move. Try to walk and feed your pet at the same times as usual.
